Ubuntu Touch
I read that a similar stick, Zealz GK802, supports Ubuntu Touch.
Could this be possible with Equiso dumb "pro" stick as well?

Also what would take to create a custom ROM for Equiso based on a more recent Android version?

Can't be similar. It uses a Freescale i.MX6 and the Equiso uses the NuSmart NS115. Apart from the fact that the GK802's SoC is a quadcore and the Equiso's is a dual core, the modules (devices) in the SoC are pretty much different.

I'm working on a hack that might bear fruit- but it will be a hack all the same.
